A relaxing evening at the Dhow & Anchor British Restaurant in Dubai

A British colleague asked if I fancied “going out for tea”. Being from the North of England, this doesn’t refer to a cup of tea, but an evening meal.

I didn’t have plans so agreed and she suggested the ‘D&A’. I’d actually never heard of it. Upon googling I found out its a British gastro style pub at the fancy Jumeirah Beach Hotel.
I perused the online menu Dhow&Anchor and although there weren’t many vegetarian options – most of the mains are meat based, they did have some lovely looking fish choices (I do occasionally eat fish) and fish and chips stood out! I get cravings for fish and chips every now and then must be from my upbringing near the North Sea!

We arrived at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel at about 7.30pm, walked inside and through to the D&A restaurant and asked for an outside table on the terrace. This was the highlight of the place. They have huge benches outside reminiscent of a beer garden back home, but the aroma of the shisha gives it that exotic touch- ah I love that smell. We had a stunning view out over the Burj al Arab, which was changing colour from orange to red. Stunning.

I selected a lemonade and fish and chips and my companion a coke and wagyu burger.

Before our food arrived the waitress brought us bread, but not just a few rolls or slices- an entire loaf of warm bread with a pot of butter! A great idea but come on… if two of us scoffed down a giant loaf of bread between us we’d never have room for our meal!

The portions were generous, aka huge. The fish tasted fabulous, perfectly cooked and coated in crispy batter, with half a lemon and tartare sauce on the side to accompany it. I passed on the mushy peas but they came as part of the meal. The chips were huge and homemade.

Although the main courses were on the pricey side, they were buy one get one free on the entertainer app. The service was good apart from the fact I later asked for a white wine which never arrived. I didn’t chase it up as I had my lemonade. I’m sure if I reminded them, they would have brought it quickly as they seemed very friendly and polite. The bill for two soft drinks and two meals (with the entertainer voucher) came to 180AED, considering the fantastic location this wasn’t bad.

Overall I recommend the D&A as a great relaxing place to catch up with friends. It doesn’t play loud music on the terrace (I’m not sure about inside) so you can hear yourself talk. AC units outside enable you to feel cool even in the cloying heat.

Overall a pleasant evening and I would definitely return!
